Understanding the Science Behind Macular Focus®

AREDS and AREDS 2: The Foundation of Eye Health
The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and its follow-up, AREDS 2, were landmark clinical trials sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI) to investigate age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, and the role of nutritional supplements in slowing disease progression.

  • AREDS (1992–2001) included 3,640 participants aged 55–80 over 6.3 years. It showed that a high-dose formulation of antioxidants (vitamins C and E, beta-carotene) and zinc reduced the risk of advanced AMD by ~25% in individuals with intermediate AMD or advanced AMD in one eye. No significant effects were found for cataracts.

  • AREDS 2 (2006–2011) improved the original formula by replacing beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin, reducing zinc, and adding omega-3 fatty acids. The study confirmed that lutein and zeaxanthin maintained AMD protection and were safer for former smokers. Omega-3s did not provide additional benefits. Today, the AREDS 2 formulation is recommended for those with intermediate or advanced AMD.

Macular Focus® builds on this clinically proven foundation, delivering targeted eye protection through a next-generation AREDS 2–based formula.

Why Taurine Was Not Included

Recent research has shown that taurine can fuel the growth of leukemia cells by promoting glucose metabolism in cancerous tissues. To maximize safety, Nutrient Revolution removed taurine from both Macular Focus® and Macular Focus® Plus Multivitamin.

Macu-LZ™: Advanced Carotenoid Protection

Macular Focus® features Macu-LZ™, a plant-based, non-GMO, vegetarian, gluten-free, Kosher and Halal-certified blend of lutein, RR-zeaxanthin, and RS (meso)-zeaxanthin. These macular carotenoids support eye, brain, and skin health while protecting against harmful blue light from digital screens and LED lighting. Clinical studies, including AREDS 2, demonstrate that lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation can increase macular pigment density, improve visual function, and slow AMD progression.

Key Ingredients and Why They Matter

  • Trans-Resveratrol (60 mg): Protects retinal cells, supports mitochondrial health, and reduces anti-VEGF injections and macular fibrosis in wet AMD.

  • Zinc (25 mg as Zinc Gluconate): Clinically proven to slow AMD progression at a safe and highly absorbable dose.

  • Coenzyme Q10 (100 mg): Supports retinal cell mitochondrial health and reduces oxidative stress.

  • Astaxanthin (6 mg): Powerful antioxidant that protects retinal cells, supports retinal function, and reduces inflammation.

  • Black Currant (50 mg): Supports ocular blood flow, dark adaptation, and resilience against blue light and AMD.

  • Saffron (20 mg): Protects retinal cells from oxidative stress, supports visual function, and helps stabilize macular structure.

  • Bilberry (25% Anthocyanidins): Enhances retinal antioxidant defense and supports retinal health.

  • Lycopene: Reduces oxidative stress and inflammation, protecting retinal pigment epithelial cells in dry and wet AMD.

  • Maqui Berry (60 mg): Protects retinal cells, improves tear production, and defends against blue light–induced damage.
