AREDS and AREDS 2: Eye Health You Can Trust

The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and AREDS 2 are landmark NEI-sponsored trials demonstrating that targeted nutritional supplements can reduce the risk and progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

  • AREDS (1992–2001): High-dose antioxidants (vitamins C and E, beta-carotene) plus zinc reduced the risk of advanced AMD by ~25% in individuals with intermediate or advanced AMD in one eye.
  • AREDS 2 (2006–2011): Improved the original formulation by replacing beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin and reducing zinc. This maintained AMD protection, safer for former smokers, while omega-3 fatty acids did not show additional benefit.

Macular Focus® Plus Multivitamin builds on this evidence-based foundation, combining retinal protection with full-spectrum daily nutrition in a single, convenient formula.

Why Taurine Was Not Included

Research indicates that taurine can promote growth in certain leukemia cells, so it was removed from both Macular Focus® and Macular Focus® Plus Multivitamin to ensure safety.

Macu-LZ™: Advanced Eye Protection

This formula includes Macu-LZ™, a blend of lutein, RR-zeaxanthin, and RS (meso)-zeaxanthin, clinically proven to support macular health, increase macular pigment density, and protect against harmful blue light from screens and modern lighting.

Key Ingredients and Benefits

  • Trans-Resveratrol (60 mg): Protects retinal cells, supports mitochondrial health, and reduces macular fibrosis in wet AMD.
  • Zinc (25 mg as Zinc Gluconate): Clinically proven to slow AMD progression while minimizing side effects.
  • Coenzyme Q10 (100 mg): Supports mitochondrial function in retinal pigment epithelial cells and reduces oxidative stress.
  • Astaxanthin (6 mg): A potent antioxidant that protects retinal cells, reduces inflammation, and supports macular function.
  • Black Currant (50 mg): Improves ocular blood flow, dark adaptation, and resilience against blue light–related stress.
  • Saffron (20 mg): Supports retinal health, visual function, and macular stability.
  • Bilberry (25% Anthocyanidins): Protects against oxidative stress and inflammation in retinal cells.
  • Lycopene: Supports both dry and wet AMD by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.
  • Maqui Berry (60 mg): Protects against blue light–induced retinal damage and supports dry eye relief.
  • Full-Spectrum Multivitamins and Minerals: Provides essential nutrients for overall health, supporting cardiovascular, immune, and neurological function.
